Upcoming Course

The Caregiver Transformation Retreat

May 6, 2021 to June 10, 2021

Our Caregiving Transformation Retreat offers a premium, virtual experience designed for dynamic and interactive sessions.  This online workshop series consists of 6 one-hour synchronous sessions over a 6-week period, with approximately one hour of written reflection and/or reading each week to maximize learning and impact. Participants will also have the opportunity to participate in one virtual small group therapy session to address individual challenges.

Designed to inspire, instruct and engage, these sessions help you learn about caregiving, find support, communicate more effectively in your caregiver role and relationship, and establish meaningful connections. The course is suited for all caregivers, from those who are beginning their caregiving journey to others who have been caring for many years. This immersive and personal experience will provide you with tools and knowledge to help you provide the best possible care, no matter its nature.

Week 1: May 6, 2021 2:00PM to 3:00 PM ET

Introduction and Orientation

In this introductory live session, facilitators will introduce themselves and orient participants to the six-week program. Participants and facilitators will then join breakout rooms to introduce themselves and discuss their personal caregiving goals as well as their reasons for joining the workshop.

Week 2: May 13, 2021 2:00PM to 3:00 PM ET

Identity and Resilience in Caregiving

Caregivers are usually so consumed by the urgent tasks of caregiving that they fail to consider the social realities of care, including how care can change human relationships and one’s concept of self. In this session, participants will gain research-based insights on caregiving identity and learn a framework for caregiver resilience, offering a reliable tool for ongoing reflection, strategy, and growth in the caregiver role.

Session hosted and facilitated by: Dr. Aaron Blight, Ed.D

Week 3: May 20, 2021 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM ET

Caregiver Communication and Literacy

Caregivers often feel compelled to put on masks to “protect” their loved ones and save precious emotional energy from others’ well-intentioned but disappointing responses.  Over time, caregivers may find themselves sharing what they think others want to hear, creating feelings of aloneness and resentment. In this session, we will enhance participants’ caregiver literacy so you can more authentically communicate the complexity of your care experiences and leverage the kinds of in-person and online support most valuable to you throughout the care journey.

Session hosted and facilitated by: Zachary White, PhD

Week 4: May 27, 2021 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM ET

Resources and Support

Participants will share what kinds of hidden resources exist for caregiving families during Covid19 and beyond. Opportunities for face to face support and in-person home support will be identified using principles of Asset Based Community Development. Facilitated by Donna Thomson

Week 5: June 3, 2021 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM ET

Group Therapy Experience

Caregivers experience a variety of emotions which they may be aware of and sometimes not. As caregivers, it is important to first bring these emotions to awareness in order to better understand them, and then seek support from others in order to obtain validation and look at utilizing healthy coping skills.  During this small group therapy experience, participants will be encouraged to discuss amongst each other the emotions they experience which the facilitator will then engage the group in discussion about themes that arise and various ways of coping.  The outcome of this therapeutic group process will be that participants will feel supported and learn more about themselves as well as learn from others’ experiences.  (There will be two days and times offered to allow for a small group experience, but these groups will be assigned randomly by facilitator.)

Please note the timings for breakout sessions

Session 1 : 1PM – 2 PM (Group #1)

Session 2: 2PM – 3PM (Group #2)

All times in Eastern Time
